Description

🔹 Uses of Clomifene Citrate 50 mg

In Women:

• Primary use: Treatment of infertility caused by anovulation or oligo-ovulation.

• Conditions:

  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

  • Dysfunctional hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis

  • Amenorrhea (no periods) due to hormonal imbalance

In Men (off-label):

• Male infertility due to low sperm count (oligospermia).

• Secondary hypogonadism (low testosterone due to pituitary/hypothalamic causes).

🔹 Dosage Guidelines

⚠️ Must be taken under doctor’s prescription & monitoring.

For Women (Ovulation Induction):

• Starting dose: 50 mg once daily for 5 days (usually starting on Day 2–5 of menstrual cycle).

• If ovulation does not occur, dose may be increased to 100 mg once daily for 5 days in the next cycle.

• Maximum dose: 150 mg/day (not recommended to exceed).

• Maximum cycles: Usually up to 6 cycles; longer use not advised.

For Men (off-label):

• 25–50 mg once daily or every alternate day.

• Duration: Weeks to months (under medical supervision).

🔹 How it Works

• Clomifene blocks estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus → brain senses “low estrogen”.

• This stimulates release of GnRH (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone) → increases FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) & LH (Luteinizing Hormone).

• In women → promotes ovulation by stimulating ovarian follicles.

• In men → increases LH & FSH → stimulates testosterone production & spermatogenesis.

🔹 Effects / Benefits

✅ In Women:

• Induces ovulation in about 70–80% of cases.

• Pregnancy rates around 30–40% after several cycles.

• Useful in PCOS-related infertility.

✅ In Men:

• May improve testosterone levels, sperm count, and motility.

🔹 Side Effects

Common:

• Hot flashes 🌡️

• Abdominal bloating / pelvic discomfort

• Headache / Dizziness

• Breast tenderness

• Nausea / Vomiting

• Mood swings / irritability

Less Common but Serious:

• Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) – ovaries enlarge, abdominal pain, fluid retention.

• Multiple pregnancy (twins or more – about 5–10%).

• Blurred vision / visual disturbances (reversible, but drug should be stopped if occurs).

• Ovarian cysts.

• Rare: Liver dysfunction.

🔹 Contraindications (Do NOT use if…)

• Pregnancy (already pregnant) 🤰

• Liver disease

• Uncontrolled thyroid/adrenal disorders

• Hormone-sensitive cancers (e.g., endometrial carcinoma)

• Ovarian cysts not related to PCOS
